Every cat owner knows there’s nothing better than cuddling with your cat. Some cats are natural snugglers, always ready for a cuddle, while others prefer to keep their distance. If you want a lap cat but your pet isn’t there just yet, here are a few ways to encourage them to become more affectionate. They’ll be purring away in your lap in no time.
Build Trust
Cats seek out affection when they feel safe. If your cat is timid or independent, take time to build their trust by respecting their space and engaging in positive interactions. Let them come to you on their own terms. Do not force them to interact with you by picking them up or placing them in your lap. This may only deter them even more. Be patient and they will come to you when they are ready.
Create a Cozy Environment
Make your lap an inviting place by sitting in a warm, quiet spot. Use a soft blanket or pillow to create a comfortable area. A heated blanket or pet mat is a great option too as cats love warmth and will find it hard to resist. Once they are on or near you, try to limit your movements. Sudden noises or movements may startle them and cause them to run off. They need to know they are safe with you and that they can relax and be vulnerable with you nearby.
Offer Treats and Positive Reinforcement
Encourage your cat to sit near you with treats or gentle petting. If they climb into your lap, reward them with a treat or some kind words to reinforce the behavior. Be consistent in your interactions and try to build positive associations.
Remember to only pet them in areas where they like to be pet - heads, chins, and cheeks are usually safe bets. Tummies and tails are less so.
Learn Their Favorite Spots
If your cat likes a certain chair or sofa, sit there and wait for them to come to you. They will likely sit near or on you if you are in their favorite spot.
Let Them Lead
Never force your cat onto your lap. Let them approach you and leave whenever they want. Cats like to feel in control. If they know they can come and go as they please, they will be more inclined to join you for a cuddle. Over time, they may stay longer as they feel more reassured that nothing bad happens when they’re in your lap. Any progress is good progress.
Keep a Routine
Cats love a routine. If you consistently sit in the same spot and invite them to join you there, they will learn that this is part of their day and they will start to expect it and even look forward to it.
With a little patience and the right approach, your cat may soon be curling up in your lap for cozy snuggles on a regular basis, happier than ever.
