What Are Dewclaws and Why Do Cats Have Them?

on

If you've ever taken a close look at your cat’s front paws, you might have noticed a small, thumb-like claw a little higher up on the inside of their leg. That’s a dewclaw! But what does it do and why is it there? This claw actually plays an important role in your cat's daily life.

What is a Dewclaw?

Dewclaws are the non-weight-bearing toes located near the cat’s wrist. Most cats have dewclaws only on their two front legs, but some cats may have them on their hind legs too. They’re surprisingly useful and are kind of like the cat version of a thumb.

What Are Dewclaws Used For?

While the dewclaws are not essential, they can be quite useful for many reasons. Dewclaws help cats grip, climb, or groom. Cats often use their dewclaws while playing with their toys for added stability. They are also used while hunting to catch and hold down their prey. While grooming, cats can use them as little combs to help detangle their fur.

Dewclaw Maintenance

Dewclaws don’t touch the ground when cats walk, so they don’t get worn down as well as their other claws. They can easily get overgrown unless you’re diligent about giving your cat nail trims. Make sure to trim your cat’s nails every month or so to prevent overgrowth and to help keep them comfortable. Overgrown claws can curl back around and grow into the paw pad, which causes a lot of discomfort and can lead to infection.

Next time your cat is playing with their toys, take a closer look at their paws and watch their dewclaws in action. Those little claws are just one of many examples of how your cat is so incredible.

Love, Nala
