The 3-3-3 Rule of Adoption

on

When bringing a new cat home, the first three days, three weeks, and three months are very important for setting them up for success. Understanding what to expect when you bring a new pet home will help you to manage expectations and successfully transition them into the family. With a little time, patience, and consistency, you and your cat can build trust, establish a strong bond, and create healthy routines.

The First Three Days - Decompressing

When you adopt a new cat, they will need time to decompress, adjust, and acclimate to their new surroundings. Most cats don’t like change; they thrive on routine and any changes to that throw them off.

Now they are arriving at a new place with new people. They may be confused, stressed, or scared. Setting them up in a small and quiet space at first will help them settle in without feeling too overwhelmed.

A bathroom or small bedroom is perfect and will give them enough space to explore when they want and still feel secure. Provide their food and water and litter box along with some toys, blankets, and a cozy place to hide.

Allow your cat to approach you on their own terms so they feel a sense of control. Your cat may be very nervous and hide for the first couple of days or only come out at night. They may only eat and drink a little bit. They may not go to the bathroom or they may have accidents due to stress. Be patient and allow your cat to adjust at their own pace. Ensure that all interactions are positive ones.

The First Three Weeks - Establishing a Routine

Your cat is settling in and getting used to their new routine and environment. They are likely getting more comfortable, walking more confidently, and exploring the home. They are probably acting more curious and may be more playful.

They are learning your schedule and developing habits. Try to feed them, play with them, and go to bed at the same time every day so they know what to expect. A routine helps them feel safe and in control. Keeping to a schedule will also help strengthen your bond.

The First Three Months - Feeling at Home

Your cat is realizing they are finally “home.” They’ve adjusted to their new home and family members. They will be feeling confident and their true personality will be shining through. They trust you, they are feeling safe, they’ve developed a new routine, and together you’re fostering a wonderful relationship.

Love, Nala
