The Benefits of Adopting a Senior Cat

on

Adopting a cat is one of the best things you can do for yourself and for a cat in need. There are thousands of cats looking for homes and any one you adopt can be a perfect companion. But while you are searching for your new bff, please keep older cats in mind! Senior cats often get overlooked at the shelter due to their age, but there are so many joys and advantages of adopting an older cat into your family.

Senior cats have their personalities already established so what you see is what you get. You can tell if they’re a mellow lap cat, an explorer, still playful and rambunctious, or more of a lone wolf who likes being alone. By knowing their temperament ahead of time, you can choose to adopt a cat that perfectly fits your lifestyle.

Senior cats tend to be calmer than younger cats. Kittens are AMAZING and so much fun, but they can be a lot of work. If you’re looking for someone more laid-back who wants to hang out and watch TV, an older cat may be a better match.

Senior cats may adapt more easily to a new home. Older cats probably lived in a home before and are used to the sights and sounds of a household. They are litter box trained and *hopefully* know not to climb the curtains or chew the plants.

Senior cats are considered to be ten years and older and cats can live to be twenty years old! Older cats definitely still have a lot of life left and even more love to give. They may be a little slower and tire more easily, but seniors are still playful, curious, and affectionate.

Shelters are overcrowded and, unfortunately, animals face euthanasia every day. Senior pets are among the first to be euthanized due to lack of space. By adopting a senior cat, you’re not only saving their life but giving them a second chance at the loving forever home they deserve.

By adopting a senior cat, you’re giving them a new lease on life. They will return the favor with endless gratitude and devotion. Giving an older cat a safe and loving home for their golden years can be an incredibly fulfilling experience for you both. So, the next time you’re looking to adopt or know someone who is, stop by a rescue or shelter and meet the older cats. Your new best friend might be waiting there for you.

Love, Nala
